Andrew Chapman leads Australian UAV’s NSW operations and has a background in aviation, technology, computer graphics and film production. With over 8 years’ experience in the new drone industry, Andrew has previously founded a successful UAV company while living in Canada and also served on the board of the national industry body, Unmanned Systems Canada.

Andrew has strong skills in project management, digital image processing, technology and aviation. He is a licensed RePL Pilot certified by Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and licensed PPL Pilot by CASA and Transport Canada and has been flying remotely piloted aircraft of various forms since the age of 7.

He has a strong vision for the future of the industry and is incredibly driven and excited by all the possibilities and efficiencies that this new technology can bring to various industries and special projects.

Program Summary

The list of industries getting disrupted by the once-humble drone keeps on growing. Brazilian metals and mining giant, Vale S.A., has slashed geotechnical field surveys from 3 hours to just 20 minutes using drones. At the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge in Cincinnati, automated UAVs driven by flight planning software have enabled bridge maintenance crews to quickly and accurately appraise the state of infrastructure elements, realizing cost savings of 40%. With their mobility, ease of use and ability to carry sophisticated tools like sensors, drones are rapidly becoming invaluable enablers of efficiency across different sectors.

Introduction

The list of use cases for drone technology is rapidly growing alongside its potential to disrupt and optimize. From simple aerial photography that costs a fraction of what using manned aircraft would cost to perform geo-mapping, incident detection and other applications, drones have transformed work on the ground in various industries. Australian transport infrastructure company Transurban, for instance, has used inspection drones to speedily gather infrastructure data even in confined spaces and dark conditions under bridges and roads, removing the need for disruptive closures that cause drivers huge inconvenience while significantly boosting team productivity and efficiency.

In this 2-day program, certified RePL and PPL Pilot Andrew Chapman will walk you through key strategies and case studies around deploying drones in various operations and industries. You will also learn about the latest CASA drone regulations and the challenges these may bring, get a glimpse into the future of drones - including AI, machine learning and drone swarms - and gain a better understanding of how to improve the accuracy, processing and management of drone data captures.

  • Drone regulations:
    • History, status, current changes in progress, future directions over 1,3,5,10-year time horizons
    • CASA vs International regulations

Session 3:

  • Visual Line Of Sight (VLOS) vs Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS) operations
  • Drone registration coming in 2020, requirements, challenges
  • Drone maintenance requirements and recommendations
  • Safety and compliance:
    • Regulatory perspective
    • Best practices for internal success and safety
    • Evolving enterprise programs and support systems

Session 4:

  • Drone certification systems (ISO, UASI, etc.)
  • Drone standards for various industries emerging (e.g. RISSB, oil + gas, etc.)
  • Drone insurance

  • Drone technology: hands-on look at a multi-rotor and a fixed-wing drone, components, maintenance issues, etc.
  • Drone sensors: what is available, capability, costs 

Session 6:

  • Drone data: types and formats of deliverables
  • Drone data processing:
    • In-house (e.g computers and software)
    • External contractors
    • Online (cloud processing)
  • Drone data hosting: sensitivity, security, sovereignty and governance (e.g. restrictions around cloud for many clients)

Session 7:

  • AI and Machine Learning: status and future pathway to automated analysis of drone data
  • Mini workshop: plans or thoughts for drones in your organisation, considerations, break it down and discuss as a group interactive session
  • Privacy issues, nuisance and public perception issues 

Session 8:

  • Evolving technology and trends (e.g. drone swarms, 'drone in a box' unattended systems, UTM traffic management, etc.)
